Another year, another cracker for WA wine. Throughout 2024, there were some absolute knockouts to hit the shelf. But almost more importantly, quality across the board was strong, and bang for buck was never better.

“There are so many great wines,” says wine writer Ray Jordan.

“There’s a continuation of the slightly lighter and more elegant style of wine being produced. For example, I think we’ve past that point with Chardonnay where we went too mean and lean and I think they’re now filling out and becoming more drinkable at early stages. It’s a continually evolving thing.”

Ray’s latest book, WA Wine Review showcases more than 600 drops, from tastings of nearly one-thousand wines.

“It’s about a three-month tasting exercise. I do about 950 wines and they can be long, isolated days. There’s no shortcut. You’ve got to put your nose in a glass, taste it, spit it out and take some notes.

“I’ve established the way I do the wines, but you have to relentlessly push through. If I go into the high scores, I like to have another look at the wine.”
